Humanitaire Corridors
1. Het in Italië gelanceerde project “Menselijke corridors” (voor vluchtelingen in Libanon naar Italië – het alternatief voor de sluiproutes over land of over zee) vindt nu navolging in Frankrijk en in België, waar met name de Egidius-gemeenschap en Rooms-katholieke parochies en anderen zich zullen inzetten voor het overbrengen en ontvangen van vluchtelingen uit het Midden-Oosten.
2. In Italië zullen door de christelijke organisaties samen met de regering (in 2018 en 2019) 1000 vluchtelingen worden overgebracht en ontvangen.
3. In het grensgebied van Italië en Frankrijk (de Alpen) zoeken vrijwilligers aan beide zijden van de grens de beste manieren om vluchtelingen verder te helpen op hun tocht richting Noordwest-Europa. In een bericht wordt gesproken over jonge mannen die zo op weg zijn.

Het immigratieprobleem heeft de volle aandacht ook van de protestantse wereld in Italië, met hun deelname aan de opvang in Zuid-Italië en andere projecten. Daarom worden uit een officieel onderzoeksdocument enkele feitelijke gegevens doorgegeven om de emotionele aspecten en overdrijvingen tegen te gaan.
Zo wordt gemeld dat de gevonden gegevens uitwijzen dat de immigranten meer bijdragen aan de Italiaanse samenleving, dan dat ze ervan zullen ontvangen (bijvoorbeeld in de pensioenen).
En ook het feit dat er meer christelijke vluchtelingen uit Afrika in Italië aankomen dan moslims, is de moeite van het overdenken waard. De “islamisering” als gevolg van de aanwezigheid van immigranten is een vooroordeel.
Als de door de Europese politieke leiders afgesproken opname van immigranten in heel Europa uitgevoerd zouden worden, zou vanuit de cijfers gezien de instroom in Italië stabiel en beheersbaar blijven. Blijkbaar verloopt juist het doorstromen in de praktijk niet.

Waldenzen en de vluchtelingen in de praktijk

Het is een vanzelfsprekend feit dat men in Italië steeds geconfronteerd wordt met de opvang van vluchtelingen/asielzoekers/(illegale) immigranten; Italië is een grensland van Europa, vooral voor mensen uit Afrika. In Sicilië in het Zuiden, voor heel veel mensen het begin van Europa, wordt al veel gedaan om mensen een waardige opvang en behandeling te geven. Ook elders in Italië zijn de kerkgemeenschappen druk bezig om voor opvang te zorgen, en door werktrainingen te geven, ook te werken aan de integratie. Zo worden er kleding en fietsen gemaakt en/of gerepareerd, ook voor de immigranten zelf.

Mogelijk speelt een psychologische rol voor de Protestanten dat zijzelf een minderheid zijn, voor wie de herinnering aan verdrukking en verdrijving nog heel levendig is – en dat niet alleen in een ver verleden, maar voor sommigen nog tot in de vorige eeuw.

Dat komt zeker ook tot uitdrukking in de oecumenische betrokkenheid bij een project waarbij bijvoorbeeld mensen uit Syrië en Libanon naar Italië overgebracht worden, en wie dus de gevaarlijke en kostbare overtocht per boot bespaard wordt.

Volgens het Hoge Commissariaat van de Verenigde Naties voor de vluchtelingen waren er van januari tot september 2015 meer mannelijke vluchtelingen dan vrouwen en kinderen: resp. 72 %, 13 % en 15 %. Vanaf begin 2016 zijn die getallen echter veranderd: vrouwen en kinderen vormen 57 % van hen die op de vlucht zijn voor de verschrikkingen van de oorlog. Volgens het Commissariaat heeft 85 % van hen recht op de vluchtelingen-status omdat zij slachtoffers van vervolging in hun eigen land zijn. In januari/februari 2016 kwam 47 % van hen uit Syrië, 27 % uit Afghanistan en 17 % uit Irak.

In 2015 zijn er volgens een telling ruim 3.700 vluchtelingen onderweg omgekomen, in januari/februari 2016 al meer dan 400 mensen. In Italië zijn er in de eerste 2 maanden van 2016 9.000 mensen aangekomen (in Griekenland 120.000 mensen). In Italië komen heel veel mensen uit Midden-Afrika aan, voor 79 % mannen. Uit het Midden-Oosten zijn relatief veel vrouwen en kinderen gevlucht.
Samen met de algemene (nationale en Europese) opvang-organisaties zijn ook de kerken in Italië heel actief betrokken bij de opvang, bijv. door sociale ontmoetingen. De diakonale instanties bemiddelen bij de zoektocht naar woonruimtes voor vluchtelingen.
